Upon arrival in Kengtung, stroll around the charming town of Kengtung, once the capital of the Golden Triangle and the heart of the Shan state's ethnic diversity, as today is at your leisure.
In Pin Tauk, nearly an hour drive from Kengtung, you visit the villages of the Akha and Enn tribes. The Enn people, mostly Buddhists or Animists, belong to the most traditional ethnic groups in Myanmar are locally known for their black teeth due to chewing betel. Enjoy lunch at the picturesque scenery of the Pin Tauk waterfall, before visiting the small Akha tribal villages. Most of the Akha people have baptized. Listen to the tales of the village life, told by the Akha women, who are known for pipe-smoking. Hiking around the villages is not difficult and will take approximately four hours. Return to your hotel in Kengtung in the afternoon.
Today you visit Wan Nyet, located near the Chinese border and only half an hour hike from the city of Maila. There you meet the people of the Lwe tribe. The families stay together with more than five others in huge longhouses. Visit the monastery nearby, which architecture reminds guests more of temples in Thailand than Myanmar. Hike another hour to visit another Loi village, Wan Sheng. There you visit a Baptist church as the tribal people have converted to Baptism. Return to your hotel in Kengtung in the afternoon.
Loimwe is located southeast of Kengtung at an altitude of 1.600 m above the sea level. Due to its location, guests can enjoy the cool temperate climate. The former British hill station remains colonial buildings and Catholic church, built in the 19th century by the Italian mission. Today's path will lead through forest and terraced rice fields to reach several ethnic villages, where you gain insight into the local life and practices.
After breakfast, we transfer you back to Kengtung.
